Eighth Weekend 2011

This year we were delighted to welcome back Dr Harriet Garrod as our guest speaker.
Harriet attended Beechwood from 1991 - 96; she is now a Chartered Counselling Psychologist working in the forensic field, specialising in male personality disorder, violent offenders and psychopathy. She arrived in her current role by an unusual route. After studying Theatre Studies, Law and Fine Art at A-level, she read Performing Arts and completed a Masters in Theatre Practices.
With a strong urge to be more adventurous, Harriet then studied for an MSc in Legal and Criminological Psychology, and a Postgraduate Conversion Diploma in Applied Psychology and Statistics. Long shifts in private and NHS psychiatric hospitals inspired her to undertake doctorate training, involving trainee posts in prison settings.  She is currently acting-head of department in a forensic low-secure hospital, responsible for sixty patients; she works alongside five clinical multi-disciplinary teams providing therapeutic interventions as part of a clinical treatment programme.

After presenting examination certificates to pupils and returning students, Harriet gave a compelling speech on leadership and leading by example.
