Eighth Weekend 2008

Eighth Weekend was a great success and it was wonderful to welcome back former students for the reunion lunch. A good crowd returned to receive their examination certificates, and we were also very pleased to see old friends of the guest of honour, former Headgirl, Miatta Fahnbulleh.

After spending six years at Beechwood from 1991 – 1997, Miatta went on to do a first degree in politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University and a Masters and PhD in Economic Development at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Following her PhD, she worked as a research fellow at LSE where she lectured students, presented papers at international conferences and published articles on economic development in Africa.

After LSE, she worked as an international development consultant for a year and half, advising governments in developing and transitional economies on economic policy and development strategy. Most recently, she has been working as Senior Policy Adviser for the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit in the UK, where she provides strategic advice and policy recommendations on a range of economic and domestic policy issues.

After presenting certificates, Miatta gave an inspirational and entertaining talk to the School. The ceremony was followed by Mass and the traditional candlelit procession to Mater Square.
