Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year has its roots in a legend about a monster called ‘Year’, who came out and scared the villagers. They found out that ‘Year’ was afraid of the colour red and noise, so they put up many red banners and firecrackers in the villages.
When ‘Year’ saw all these, it left; therefore, they celebrated it as the Chinese New Year. This is a traditional festival, with 12 different characters that reach represent a different year. This year is the Year of the Rat. Chinese people decorate their houses with red banners and New Year flowers. The New Year lasts for 10 days during which they eat special food, and married people give out red pockets containing money to their younger relatives.
Yesterday, it was Chinese New Year, “Gong hei fat choi”. Happy New Year everyone. Debbie Ng

Pancakes fly again
Once again intrepid teams from each year group competed to become the fastest flippers at Beechwood. The races, in the Auditorium, were very close and impeccably timed by our judges, Mr Awdry and Mrs Prodrick.
Even the pancake toss was scrutinised and proper flipping was monitored closely by Mrs Allen and Mrs Findley, with Mrs Ringer also applying an expert eye.
The winners, who then took on the staff team, were 8S, in a splendid time of 1.25 minutes. So congratulations to Dr Siddiqui and his team of Kate, Alex, Harriet and Hannah for excellent flipping and rapid running too!
