Welcome
It is a privilege to work alongside the dedicated team of staff who care for, nurture and educate every child in the Preparatory School.
Here, boys and girls have the opportunity to learn and grow, in an atmosphere which allows children to enjoy childhood; the children can be themselves and make the most of their talents.
We encourage all children to have high standards both in their work and in their behaviour, treating one another with kindness and developing a respect for others. Every pupil is valued as an individual, building confidence and self-esteem.
To see for yourself what Beechwood has to offer, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a visit.
I look forward to meeting you.
Mrs Rachel Burton Head of Prep

Pastoral Care
 |
| Playground pals make playtime happy |
Everyone is special at Beechwood. A high adult to pupil ratio ensures that each child receives individual care, support and attention within a family atmosphere.
The older children in the Prep School are very much a part of our pastoral care. Year 6 Prefects are assigned to each class and, amongst other duties, are responsible for escorting younger children in to school after they have been dropped off in the morning.
Year 5 children take part in a Playground Pals scheme, where they encourage younger children to play games and participate in group activities at playtimes.

Reception
Reception is the bridge between the Nursery and Key Stage 1. The children are taught in a similar way to those in the Nursery, following the Foundation Stage curriculum and its six areas of learning. By attending assemblies, and having playtime and lunch with Key Stage 1 children, the Reception children are gradually integrated more into the Prep school. They are also included in the extra curricular activities that take place throughout the year, so that they become very familiar with all the routines of Key Stage 1 and get to know the staff who will teach them.
Animal Hospital
Reception had a visit from two veterinary nurses on Wednesday afternoon. We had lots of fun bandaging our toy pets and then taking them home in the pet carriers that we had made. Jo and Beth, the nurses, taught us a lot about caring for animals and we even saw some of the instruments they use for operations.

Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1 the children are taught by their form teachers most of the time, and they build a close relationship with them. They have specialist teachers for subjects such as PE, Music, French and RE.
At Beechwood, we follow the National Curriculum, with the addition of extra subjects such as Swimming, Cooking and French.
We also enhance the curriculum in many ways: we celebrated World Book day by dressing up as book characters, a local children’s author read and talked to the children, and a visit to Godstone Farm proved to be an exciting way to bring to life the topics we had learnt about in Science.

Music
Music is a popular part of the curriculum, led by a specialist teacher.
In addition, many pupils take extra-curricular instrumental lessons and join in activities such as choir, string ensemble, ocarina club and rock group.
Last Saturday, The Beechwood Singers and the Preparatory Choir were both represented at The Tunbridge Wells Arts Festival.

Sport
Boys and girls take part in a wide variety of sports in lessons and clubs at lunchtime and after school, perhaps competing in a House or School team.
Swimming is taught from Reception and our outdoor pool is popular in the Summer Term. Plans are underway to make this an indoor facility in the future.

Year 3 Violin Concert
Over the past four weeks, Year 3 have been learning the violin with Mrs Goodwin. On Wednesday they gave a small concert to their parents and teachers, playing various tunes and finishing with their favourite “Fiddler’s Blues”.
We are hoping that many of them will continue with string lessons. Thank you to Mrs Goodwin for giving her time.
