English
 |
| Poetry Day |
In the English Department, we create a friendly yet disciplined atmosphere in which pupils can debate issues, collaborate on group projects and present dramatic presentations of their texts.
We are dedicated to the development of the language skills students require, both for success in examinations, and success in life.
Our students have the opportunity to study both classical and contemporary texts, covering the genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.
During Years 7, 8 and 9 students read widely, learn to write in a variety of forms and develop their oral skills.
Private reading is promoted at all times and pupils are actively encouraged to borrow from the fiction section of the Library. Later, pupils study for GCSEs in English Language and Literature, many choosing English as an option at A-level.
Readathon and poetry competitions are popular ways to encourage everyone to make the most of their talents.
Hot Off The Press
If you had popped into the Senior School Library yesterday, you could be forgiven for thinking you had arrived in Fleet Street. Years 7, 8 and 9 threw off their pupil status and became reporters.

ICT
At Beechwood, Information & Communications Technology is delivered as a practical subject where pupils learn through hands-on experience.
The students are encouraged to use ICT facilities both at school and at home. To this end the school computer rooms are open all day and evening. Wireless broadband Internet is available thoughout the school and senior pupils can access this from their own laptop computers.
In ICT lessons, Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils become aware of both the capabilities and limitations of modern technology, through experiencing a variety of hardware and software. They develop skills that will be of benefit across all curriculum areas. In Year 9 pupils have the opportunity to gain an Award in Digital Applications, a qualification in ICT.
GCSE ICT is a popular option as a full or short course, in which students design and implement information systems for themselves and others to use.
At A-level, students use their skills in ICT for research, selection and presentation of information, as required by their studies in all subjects. They can also opt for Applied ICT at A-level.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
 |
| Small group classes |
The EAL department is a well-established centre for students whose first language is not English. Individually tailored programmes of study ensure that students can achieve their potential in all subject areas quickly and effectively.
In small groups students gain competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking, allowing them to integrate with ease into school life.
Sixth Formers are prepared for the IELTS examination for entrance into Higher Education. In addition, confidence in spoken English is enhanced by extra-curricular lessons in Oral Communication; this has become so popular that some students are now opting to take Speech and Drama lessons leading to LAMDA examinations.

House Activities
Interhouse Clowning
For one day only the Auditorium became a big top, with Ring Master, whooping crowds and clowns who wowed the audience with their amazing skills. The Inter House event for this term was something new for the Senior School, with the hidden talents for circus tricks of Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 being discovered. James and Charlotte were ace plate spinners, Dilys a graceful juggler and Izzy an amazing peacock feather balancer. All those who attempted juggling were superb and mastered an impressive level of skill in a short time. According to Ring Master Adam’s fantastic clapometer, Assisi won the day and a proud Laura, as House Captain, came up to claim the prize, the Inter House Skills Cup. Well done to all who took part and to the lively audience for cheering them on their way. As for plate spinning...don’t try that one at home!
House Activities Afternoon Just before Half Term lessons were abandoned in favour of an afternoon of sport and a problem solving activities, which saw all age-groups working together in their House Teams.
Strictly Beechwood
On Wednesday after school the Auditorium was the stage for the House Dance Competition.

Personal, Social and Health Education
The courses provided throughout the school aim to develop awareness of important issues related to life, health, society and global matters. Through these studies the students should be empowered to make informed, well-considered choices and judgements in reaction to life experiences.
The programme is a flexible one and may be tailored to meet the needs of a changing world. For each Year group the course is presented in a 50-minute session each week. A variety of different topics is addressed, and, where possible, external lecturers deliver talks or workshops on their specialist areas. We try to make use of workshops run by professionals to address issues such as bullying and drug education.
