Letter from a Sixth Former
 |
| At Beechwood, Sixth Formers enjoy a feeling of independence whilst still appreciating the support and encouragement of staff and fellow students. |
A letter from a Sixth Former about life at Beechwood
"Dear Prospective Sixth Former,
Even after A-levels no one is quite ready for the leap to university. Here at Beechwood, however, you will be given every opportunity to become independent, learn to take on responsibilities and grow in maturity so that by the end of Year 13 you will be prepared and eager to move on to Higher Education. How does Beechwood achieve this, and how is the approach different from any other school?"

Academic matters
The Sixth Form is an important part of the school, in which we prepare our students for life at university and beyond. Our first priority is to provide the support and good teaching that they need to excel in their A-level subjects. Small classes and an excellent rapport between teachers and students ensure that each student achieves her aims. Our record of A-level results is remarkable with many girls surpassing their expectations, and almost all students gaining places in higher education at universities, including Oxbridge. You can view our A-level results on the examination results page.

Personal Development
 |
| A School Council Meeting chaired by the Head Girl |
We treat our Sixth Formers as young women, giving them certain privileges and opportunities for greater independence.
They respond by being excellent role models for the school and we rely on them for the smooth running of the school day, as well as on important school occasions.
We believe that being a Sixth Former at Beechwood prepares our students well for the lives that they will lead in the world outside school.

Enrichment Programme
Current Affairs lessons, the Beechwood Cookery Skills Course, a varied Fitness Programme and a look at religions and ethical issues around the world are just some of the ways in which we give a broader education to our Sixth Formers. We invite speakers to run workshops on a variety of topics, such as "First Impressions" (image and style), "On Trial" (the work of magistrates), and Table Etiquette.
We also organise a range of cultural and social events.
 |
| The National Gallery tour was followed by a Sixties film at the National Film Theatre |

 |
| Sixth Formers let their hair down at the annual May Ball. |
|
We attend social functions at other schools and invite them back to our own Sixth Form May Ball, an annual formal Ball which is always eagerly anticipated by everyone.
Sixth Form Masquerade Ball
Beechwood Sixth Form held their Masquerade Ball at Salomons in Southborough on Saturday.
Following a champagne reception we enjoyed a delicious three-course meal in the glamorous, panelled ballroom, which had been decorated beautifully by the committee. After chocolate malteser cake, we headed for the dance floor and dragged the teachers with us.
Everyone had a fantastic time and we would like to thank all those involved for their hard work, which made this night one to remember. Daisy Lockheart
Etiquette Dinner
On Friday 8 February, the Sixth form enjoyed a three course etiquette dinner party, complete with wine tasting!
We were served, pear and goats cheese tart for starters, melt-in-your-mouth salmon for main, followed by crepes suzette flambéd before our eyes by the Head Chef.
The whole meal was delicious and everyone felt that it had been a useful experience and being served by our teachers was an exceptional treat for us all. Daisy Lockheart
Cultural Outing
On 31 January the Sixth Form were lucky enough to visit the Tutankhamun Exhibition, at the O2 Stadium, as part of their Enrichment Programme.
Even the excellent introduction from Mr Awdry had not prepared them for the sight of the magnificent artefacts, which still looked bright and beautiful even though they were over 3000 years old.

Fitness Programme
We believe that it is important for all Sixth Formers to enjoy activities which help them to keep fit and healthy. Girls have an option of joining a local health club and they can play team sports in school. In addition to PE lessons, a professional fitness trainer provides a programme of weekly sessions for all Sixth Formers, incorporating activities such as aerobics, salsa and kick boxing.
You can find out more about the fitness training by visiting the link www.annadanielsfitness.co.uk

Activities
 |
| Model United Nations General Assemply |
Sixth Formers join with students from other schools in the Young Enterprise scheme and in the Model United Nations General Assembly. In addition, many girls participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, achieving silver or gold awards.
Some girls organise clubs for juniors for example drama, dance, public speaking or debating. Sixth Formers also take responsibility by doing duties, including assisting with younger pupils as Form Prefects. You can find out about Young Enterprise:

Common Room
Tucked away below stairs, this spacious area comprises a kitchen, TV lounge and social area, and small hideaway.
“The common room is the hubbub of the Sixth Form – somewhere to relax and socialise between lessons and at breaks, or discuss your work with classmates. The kitchen proves most popular at morning break, when lunch seems just too far away – and we all make use of the pool table and TV to help unwind. All in all, the common room is the ideal place to congregate with friends and to sit down with a cup of tea and have a chat.” Gemma
Sixth Formers can use their Common Room at any time during the day, when not in lessons. They can also study in the library in their free time.

Careers Advice
"Come to Beechwood and there's a good guarantee you will be placed in a good university with the course of your choice," says Diana in Year 12.
"Visits to HE Fairs and having a well stocked Careers Library means that there is plenty of information and staff are always willing to lend a hand to help decision-making."
