The design technology programme includes cookery, textiles, ceramics and woodwork for boys and girls in Years 7 and 8. This year the Design and Technology Department has been expanded to include Graphic Products and Resistant Materials, whilst still retaining Textiles and Food Technology/Home Economics.
With the installation of a new ICT facility, students across Key Stage 3 study each of the disciplines, giving them a chance to try working with wood, plastics, graphics, ceramics, circuits & soldering, textiles and food. In Year 10, students will have the opportunity to take Product Design at GCSE.
Our project work has included; Clocks in wood and plastic, LED torches, light sensitive night light cubes that automatically light up as it gets dark, personalized USB memory sticks, Aprons, and vacuum-formed games and desk tidies.
Textiles
|
The courses are practically based and encourage the use of Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacture to develop an understanding of textile production in industry. Students work from design briefs and follow the role of the designer so that they understand how an idea is conceived, developed and eventually made into a product
You can see examples of garments designed and made in these courses in the textiles gallery by clicking here
Cookery
Healthy eating and the importance of a balanced diet are key elements within the Food Technology curriculum throughout the school. In Year 8 and 9, pupils follow a Taste of Success award scheme and those choosing GCSE Home Economics study nutrition and learn techniques which will be useful to them throughout their lives. Some students go on to study Home Economics at A-level.

Visit to Borough Market in London
Yesterday the GCSE and A level Home Economics students went to Borough Market in London. We had chance to taste different kinds of food from all over the world, both sweet and savoury. We tried food such as chilli sauce which was extremely hot, lots of olives and the boys had Ostrich sausages. We had a chance to talk with a chef, who gave us some ideas for cooking. We chose some ingredients from the market to use in our cooking at school. We made fresh pasta carbonara with bacon, spinach, mushrooms and fennel followed by apple and pear bread and butter puddings. The Year 10 students cooked wild boar stew and sweet chilli chicken. Our lunch was delicious!
