Mathematics

Mathematics is an essential tool used by other subjects, but also valuable in its own right.

In Years 7 - 9, classes are set by ability and pupils needing to build their confidence can take advantage of the extra support offered in lunchtime Help Clubs.

The Maths department works closely with the Learning Development department to ensure that gifted students, and those needing extra support, all reach their potential.

Many students compete in National Mathematics Challenge Competitions, gaining bronze, silver and gold awards.

Maths Olympiad Success

Congratulations to Chloe, who took part in the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad, held on 3 December 2009. 1,309 took part, with the first 100 candidates being awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Chloe was awarded a Certificate of Distinction as one of the top 25% of scorers, which was a considerable achievement.

In touch with Maths - a lesson in Braille

Last Friday, Mrs Moss, the ESL teacher, came to Mr Ringer's Year 9 Maths lesson to explain to us how she also teaches Braille writing to blind and half-sighted people after school.  She brought in a Braille machine in which to type and sheets of paper about Louis Braille's life, which were written in Braille.

We had to find out about Louis's life (he was French) and how he invented his language, which was difficult for him as he was blind.  It is made of sets of up to 6 dots, arranged in 2 columns of 3, which  you can feel with your fingers on the paper and read without using your eyes.  We then tried the Braille machine to write our own names.

We all had fun during this lesson, thank you to Mrs Moss.
