National Poetry Day

National Poetry Day
National Poetry Day on Thursday 8 October was celebrated in the Preparatory School with a special assembly led by Mrs Simm and Mrs Gammie. All the teachers read their favourite poems to a captivated audience of children from Reception to Year 6. They heard poems ranging from Eleanor Farjeon's "Cats" to a selection from Spike Milligan. Poetry was also read and enjoyed by pupils in their English lessons.

The Senior School's National Poetry Day celebration took place in the Library, the theme this year was "Heroes and Heroines". The guest was Bob Spencer of the Kent and Sussex Poets Society, who inspired everyone with his idea of  heroes as "people who put themselves second for the sake of others".

Mr Beesley referred to wartime heroes and Mr Truman recited a poem by the famous war poet, Siegfried Sassoon entitled "Does it Matter". Mrs Truman's very forceful yet emotional "The Charge of the Light Brigade" was in honour of soldiers who knew they were going to die.

Stephanie and Angela recited poems in their native language of Mandarin and Cantonese. There was more personal poetry recited by Mrs Prodrick and Mrs Rejbakoz and the juniors provided everyone with humour in their readings.

Thanks to Mrs Clark for all her hard work and all all those who contributed making National Poetry Day another successful event.
